In this article I wrote about how to increase website traffic back in 2008. Basically it was an old article from when I first started trying to make money online and a lot of tactics have changed. However, I skimmed through it and revised some things since I didn’t like the way certain parts sounded. I actually thought that the introductory paragraph sounded kind of lame and a little bit too professional compared to how I’m going to write now, but hopefully you gain some value from the post. It’s pretty damn lengthy so I hope you’re able to actually read it. If not, that’s totally cool, just skim through and look at each number or whatever you feel like doing.
How to Increase Your Website Traffic or Blog Traffic
Up up and away...
Ladies and gents, I’ve done plenty of research and compiled 12 of the most successful ways to increase your website’s traffic. By reading this post, you will gain valuable insight, knowledge and understanding of what it takes to generate large amounts of web traffic. I guarantee that even if you only choose to do several of the items on the compiled list below, you will significantly increase your overall number of blog readers and become aware of things you can do with your blog in the future to constantly, steadily increase site followers. UPDATE: I pretty much weeded out a lot of total crap that I had written before and replaced it with stuff that is more current and that actually works well.
1. Write Quality Content that Helps People
Quality content is the number one reason that people return to most websites. If your site lacks quality content or you are too lazy to put in the necessary writing effort, your site won’t succeed, period. It takes consistent quality content to actually build up some traffic. If you regurgitate shitty articles that can be found everywhere on the internet, who’s going to want to read your website? I sure as hell won’t.
You should be writing content that actually helps people. I will say though that if I write about something that I saw on TV on this website that’s fine because it’s a personal website. If I was doing that on any of my other websites, it wouldn’t make sense. If you want to actually get some links and people reading your website, you’ll want to put in the effort to write good posts. Don’t slack on the content, always deliver good posts. If you don’t think it’s good enough, then keep researching, keep writing, keep editing, until it’s up to your standards. The key is to give people something that they can benefit from by reading your website; provide them with something valuable that they can actually use or apply in their lives to get results.
2. Get Backlinks, Backlinks, and More Backlinks
If you really want traffic to your website, the name of the game is to get backlinks. This means you’ll basically want to get a ton of links from other websites to your website. When you get links, your search engine placement increases and you get more traffic. A website without links is pretty damn pointless. The nice thing is though that once you actually start getting links to your website, you don’t have to usually keep getting them because you’ll move up in the search engine rankings and get a lot of organic traffic.
I’d recommend getting natural backlinks from only quality websites though. Google doesn’t like when you use shady techniques such as link farms and fake college .edu PR8 domains to get you the links. Make sure that you are getting them from other friends and other website owners that have related content. Don’t point links to your website when it’s about phones from a website that’s about zebras, it will just look weird. Another thing that you could do is join blog carnivals – they do still work and get you some free links (even though probably minimal referral traffic).
3. Do Blogroll Link Exchanges
If you have a friend, or even are acquaintances with a “like-minded” website owner, it definitely helps to exchange links with each other. Basically most wordpress formatted websites have a blogroll (or place on the sidebar where you can list other links). You should definitely contact website owners to see whether they are down with exchanging links. Obviously if you write weak content or don’t have much traffic yet, you probably aren’t going to get many people willing to trade links.
I actually still do link exchanges with other websites because it straight up works. When you’re just starting out, you should probably take whatever you can get as long as the website has legitimate content. If you can’t get any, don’t stress out – you don’t even need any. I’m just saying that if you get a link from a like-minded PR5 blog with a keyword targeted link, it can really help a ton. Try to find a site with similar traffic, similar content, and similar content quality to your own. Obviously the higher the page rank, the more benefit you’re going to get from the exchange. P.S. Since this is a personal website, I am NOT doing link exchanges so please don’t waste your time or my time asking!
4. Use Social Networking and Media
I think that the best social networking outlets that you can use include:
- StumbleUpon – StumbleUpon has been around for awhile and is one of the coolest, most fun programs that you can possibly use to get your website more exposure. Not only is it a lot of fun to use, you can get a ton of traffic to your website if you write a really good post. It helps to have friends on here as well give you the green thumbs up because you’ll get even more traffic. Try to make like-minded friends that use the program often to get maximum benefit.
- Facebook Like Button – If you look at my posts, you can see that all of them include the Facebook Like button at the top. That’s because I want people to feel free to share them on Facebook. Although I am not a frequent Facebook user, I’ll take all of the traffic and recommendations that I can get from people that do actually like to use it to stay in touch. I highly recommend including this button on your blog posts (especially if you write good content).
- Twitter – Twitter gets me more traffic (second to StumbleUpon) on my websites because it has so many users. If you aren’t using Twitter, you don’t need to be for people to Tweet your content. You should already have the program TwitterFeed installed and auto updates going to that as well as a Twitter share button on all of your posts so that you get more exposure. If you notice, I have the button installed at the bottom of my posts.
- Google +1 – Google recently added what is called a “plus one” button to their webmasters’ accounts. Basically they want people to help determine search engine rankings. So if you could give this post a plus one click at the top after your done reading it, I’d appreciate it. It will help get my website up in traffic and boost its placement in the search engine results.
- Digg – I honestly don’t use Digg, Reddit, or any of the other social media programs at all anymore. I don’t know if Digg’s a lost cause or what, but if you’re on there, feel free to Digg me out of my grave by getting me some traffic from there to see if it actually works. If you do this let me know and I’ll tell you what occurred. I used to submit posts there and it always helps to get the extra link back, but for me it’s really not worth the trouble of going through their submission process. StumbleUpon is way easier to use and I don’t have to screw around.
5. Choose a Tasteful Website Theme
If you want traffic coming back, you’ve got to have a tasteful website theme. Basically you shouldn’t choose something that looks like complete shit. Right now although my website looks plain, it doesn’t look like someone threw up on it or trees are growing out of the corner. I don’t have pelicans flying in the header or ladybugs crawling on a vine up the side of the page. I basically am just using a theme that I bought called Thesis which I highly recommend if you want a nice clean layout with good SEO potential… (Read my “Thesis WordPress Theme Review” for more information)…
I go to a lot of websites these days and they are littered with advertisements (which is fine if you want to make some money), but not fine if you actually want people to return to your website. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to choose a good looking theme. If you want a more flashy look, you could have one customized by a professional, which will definitely do the trick too. I might go that route in the future, but for now I really like the clean cut layout that Thesis provides.
6. Word of Mouth Advertising: Tell Friends and Family About your Website
If you really are desperate for readers and aren’t getting any search engine traffic, you can let your family and friends know about your website. Tell them to keep reading some of your articles to stay updated. Heck, I hope that you have a supportive family because even if nobody else wants to read your stuff, they probably will check it out and maybe even be able to give you a few tips on what you can do to improve. Ask them about whether they are involved in any social media outlets and tell them to start sharing the shit out of your articles if you want even more people to know about them.
Tell your mom, dad, grandma, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. to bookmark your website and return often. You probably won’t be able to convince them to use it as their homepage though because they’ll probably want to roll with Google or whatever. With that said, a lot of people undervalue the potential of “word of mouth” promotion these days. I personally don’t really keep my family members updated though because I used to and conversations would get really fricken awkward about permalinks, pagerank, SEO, making money online, and usually they wouldn’t have a clue what I would explain to them. So if you don’t tell your family and aren’t that social, that’s completely fine, I don’t blame you.
7. Offline Website Promotion
What are some ways you can promote your website offline?
- Billboards – I have always thought that putting your website on a billboard in a high traffic area would be awesome. I don’t personally know anyone that’s done it, but if you can afford a billboard to promote your site, give it a try and let me know how it works. Feel free to put my website up there too since I was the one that gave you the tip (haha). Anyways, don’t climb up a billboard and
- Stickers – Stickers are actually pretty cool, especially if you put them on your car, and especially if they actually look good on your car. You could even consider getting a new paintjob with your website on your car for a tax write off and call it your “business car” if you are really committed. I honestly do roll with stickers, especially if you have a really solid brand and a cool customized design for it.
- Business cards – I think business cards are pretty lame, but if you want to hand out a piece of paper to someone with your name on it, there’s a chance they might checkout the website that is also on it; especially if you tell them to check out your website on the business card. Other than that, I wouldn’t even waste money on business cards, they don’t make sense, and when I pick them up, I usually use them to spit my gum on after I’ve been chewing it for a few hours. Seriously, I don’t recommend going this route unless you want to just come across as an overly professional money hungry stock broker.
- T-Shirts – If you’re a super pimp or feeling like superman, go out and get a T-Shirt with your website name on it. For this website, it wouldn’t really make sense for me to do it. I don’t want to look like a total deuchebag with a domain name of my own name on a shirt that I’m wearing, that would be pretty weak. However, if you have a cool brand or something like 2DopeBoyz, I highly recommend getting T-Shirts made and also selling them on your website so that other people wear them and you get even more free promotion.
- Posters – Print off a bunch of posters and start slapping those babies up everywhere you can think of around town. If you are passionate about your website and want some bossy promotion, hire a street team and put them to work. Get tons of copies printed, fly to NYC, Atlanta, Milwaukee, (insert big city here) and just slap them up all over town. I guarantee some people will check out your website – I know I’ve checked out sites that I’ve seen.
- TV Commercials – I’m not saying that you have to go mainstream on fricken ABC or anything, but you could get a local commercial and be creative. Most local commercials I see on TV are so bad that I’m just saying WTF I could make a better commercial every time I see them. Just get a catchy song, do something funny, and put your website on there. How do you think FreeCreditReport.com got so much traffic? TV commercials.
8. Guest Posting on Other Websites that are Popular
Guest writing on popular blogs is definitely one of the best ways to cause a huge permanent increase in the number of visitors and frequent readers/subscribers to your website. Just one guest blog post on a popular blog like ProBlogger and you can sit back and sip coronas while getting a massage while the profits roll in. Okay, not really, but you are going to get a huge boost in traffic and a very strong backlink.
When writing an article for another site, it is important that you get the credit in which you deserve, so you get a link back to your website. Additionally, you’ll want to really impress the hell out of the readers on the website that you’re writing for so that they check out your website and keep checking back. Seriously make a lasting impression on the people because at the end of the day, they are who you want to check out your site.
Though some blogs have strict rules such as: “guest writers are not allowed to publish this post on any other website,” the huge traffic increase is worth this small sacrifice of your time. If you do not want to guest write on a popular blog, consider posting an article on EzineArticles, GoArticles, HubPages, InfoBarrel, or any article directory websites like Squidoo. They do work and will get you more exposure despite the recent Rick James 5 finger slap by Google after the Pandas were let loose from the zoo.
9. Have a Contest with Prizes to Gain Some Attention
Having a contest on your own website with your readers or with another blogger is always something that attracts attention. Where attention goes, people follow and want to get involved. If you haven’t yet had a contest on your blog, it will definitely make more people aware of your website and will get you piles of backlinks to your website because people will be writing about the contest and linking to your site.
As far as prizes go, you want them to be cool, not something lame like giving away a tin or a book. You want people to win like an iPad, a MacBook Pro, or a fricken Ferrari (okay maybe the last one was pretty extreme), but you get the point. People don’t want to be part of a contest that has lame prizes. Additionally, if you don’t have enough readers yet, giving away prizes won’t be worth it. You’ve got to understand when the time is right to throw a contest.
10. Blog Commenting Still Works
Commenting on other blogs is a phenomenal way to increase traffic. Blog owners truly enjoy seeing new visitors or commenter’s blogs. If you contribute to other blogs with positive comments and aren’t commenting just to intentionally “spam” your website link, people will like you as a commenter and you will gain credibility.
More people will be willing to check out your website if you write your views or response to dialogue already in the comments section. I recommend commenting on blogs with similar interests to your own. One big plus to commenting on other [sometimes popular] blogs is that some have a “top commenter’s” section. Although most of the links that you’ll get are considered “nofollow” they still get people to recognize your website and definitely help.
I recommend commenting on only like-minded websites though because if you’re running a music website and are commenting on insurance websites (and vice versa) it’s just plain weird. As of 2011, commenting is pretty outdated and not something that I do much anymore. However if I were just starting out, I would probably drop a few comments on related websites because they do get some other people (including the owner of that website) to at least recognize that you have a website.
11. Buy Advertising on Popular Websites
Most popular websites sell advertising (except Wikipedia and Twitter). Anyways, you could buy advertisements on Facebook (which does work), you could buy advertisements on related websites with more traffic, or you could just buy on any old website that you think would be worth your money. There are various types of ads which you can buy including: text/link advertisements (usually nofollow, but “dofollow” are sweet) and banner advertisements (dimensions vary).
Plus if you really don’t know where to go to get advertisements, you can always buy them through old faithful Google. They have a program called AdWords which is free to sign up for and it basically involves buying keywords. Some are more expensive than others, but you will get your website to show up on their ads and people who click on the ads will be directed to your website, hooray! Anyways, the point is that advertisements do work for the traffic boost.
12. Post in Forums, Don’t Spam Though
If you are a member of any forum on the internet (which you probably are), just tell some of the people/members on there about your website. Most forums allow you to place a link in the footer of your website so that you can get some extra traffic that way. I recommend putting links in your forum posts to your website with keyword targeted anchor texts. Obviously the moderators might regulate your posts if you really start spamming your links everywhere.
Once you have shared your website with forum members and asked for suggestions, only link to your website when it makes sense to do so. There’s nothing more annoying than someone in a forum promoting a website that is pure shit and that they are spamming to try to get more traffic. Don’t be that guy/gal who does the spamming. If you have good content, a link in your footer, and are sharing only when necessary, the traffic will come, you don’t need to force things unnaturally.
Internet Marketing 101: How To Permanently Increase Website Traffic
Okay, I want to make it clear that the 12 ways to increase website traffic that I included in this article are not the end all be all of internet marketing and promotion. There are tons of methods that I haven’t listed here. If you are already rolling in the traffic and know what works the best, then do that. However, if you are using methods and aren’t getting results, I guarantee that if you use some of these and actually put in the work to get some visitors to your website, you will succeed; it’s really not that difficult.
The bottom line is that you should do things that work for you. You don’t need to buy advertisements if you don’t want to just like you don’t need to sign up for forums if you aren’t already a member. I just wanted to give you an idea of a few ideas that I had that you could use. By the way, if you read the post all the way to the end and liked it, I’d appreciate it if you shared it with some of your friends, blog readers, posted it on Facebook, Twitter, Google +1 or whatever.
My goal with this article was to help people that have been struggling to get traffic to their websites, pretty simple concept; I wanted to give them some internet marketing basics. Hopefully you can use some of these methods to really ramp up the traffic. Remember though, if you are going to buy a billboard sign to promote your website, you are required by law to include my website AndrewPavelski.com somewhere in the advertisement as well (kidding, but you seriously should).
