Day 30 of Insanity The Asylum was the Fit Test #3 a.k.a. Athletic Performance Assessment #3 with the most motivational homeslice ever Shaun T. To be completely honest, I felt pretty sad that this was the final day of The Asylum (Day 30). Although it is only 30 days, it is the single toughest at-home workout program I have ever done. If you know me, then you know I have done P90X and the O.G. Insanity before doing The Asylum. Let’s just say that if you are physically capable of entering and surviving The Asylum, you will get great results.
30 Days of The Asylum... DONE
Today was my final fit test and before it began I wanted to get mentally prepared to do my absolute best. If there’s one thing I learned in The Asylum, it is that you need to be mentally focused for each workout in order to do your best. I made sure that I ate a little food to give my body maximum energy for the third and final Fit Test. Additionally, I opened up my booklet and walked through each move mentally before I started the DVD to make sure that I knew what I had to do.
Not only did I walk through each of the exercises mentally, I looked at my previous results from Day 15 of The Asylum: Fit Test #2 to check how many reps I had done. I put the number of reps that I had done on Day 15 in my head and my goal with every single exercise was to beat my previous results. And it worked on every single exercise – I beat all of my previous results with every move in this final fit test. Although I didn’t really “shatter” my previous records, I did manage to beat them, even if it was only by a half of rotation.
I know that the real reason that I did better in all of the exercises really has everything to do with getting into better shape. Before the program started, you can read about me taking The Asylum: Fit Test #1 (Athletic Performance Assessment) and check out my results. If you compare my results from before the program started to what I did today, you will see that I’m stronger, am more agile, and my cardio is fucking crazy…haha But really all the results I got are thanks to what Shaun T came up with for this workout, so it’s really all from his awesome creation. I’m going to break down the exercises and then get to the results below so you can see what I did.
Day 30 of The Asylum: Fit Test #3 (Athletic Performance Assessment)
Warm-Up and Stretches
- Basic Jump Rope – I forgot that there is a decent warm up for the fit tests. I had my jump rope and did the basic jump rope really lightly because I didn’t want to over-exert myself during the warm up.
- High Knee Sprint – I did more of a “high knee jog” instead of a sprint because like I said, this was my final fit test and I’m not trying to get tired in the warm up. The crew does a jog too; they should have named this high knee jog because it’s really not a sprint. A sprint is what you do in the 1 mile run on Game Day (real talk).
- Forward Back Agility – This is meant to be a great warm up for the legs, but you don’t need to try to break your previous warm up speed record, just go at a decent pace and get warmed up. That’s what I did today and it loosened up the legs – fortunately this ended the warm up and I was able to get in a few quick stretches.
- Stretches – Even though I felt like I didn’t need stretches, the ones that Shaun did in this warm up were perfect because he doesn’t overdo it. By the time these were done, I was really ready to own up on the assessment.
The Asylum: Fit Test #3 Exercises (Last Day Recap)
Agility Heisman – Since I had mentally walked through this exercise before starting the DVD, I was ready to go and when it started, I did fucking work. When you look at my results below, realize that I did three more rotations compared to last time. A rotation is “up and down” the ladder, not just up or down – so don’t get it twisted. I actually impressed myself on the Agility Heisman with my control and mostly with my super quickfast speed.
In the words of Shaun T: "I'm smiling because I love it"... (Side note: I HATE smiling, but I mugged in all the other pics so I felt obligated)
In and Out Ab Progression – I almost lost count because I was flying through these so damn fast, and honestly, I barely beat my results from last time, but I did really good on Day 15. I beat my numbers by 4 total reps and honestly don’t know if I could beat my results today at any point in the future because I was fucking flying. Since we jump in and out of the second box the entire time, it is tougher. However, doing the Speed & Agility workout really helped me for this move.
Pull Ups – When Shaun T said “Go” for the pull ups, I got busy on that pull up bar and knocked out 5 more pull ups than last time and 6 more than the first day. I did have to take a really quick short break, but what helped was not getting water, but just quick shaking out my arms and getting right back into it. I think that Game Day, Overtime, and the Strength workouts really helped me here.
Mountain Climber Switch Kicks – Okay, this was my most improved move and I honestly felt like I had energy to burn here. I was so confident here and it’s really all a result of doing the Vertical Plyo workout so many times. Vertical Plyo is where you have to do these after you are already dead. Today I was NOT dead like I was in that workout and I managed to absolutely shatter previous records by 24 reps! And yes, I was using proper form and my kicks were up higher than my stomach. The reason I did so well is because I was not at all winded in terms of cardio.
Agility Shoulder Taps – Doing the agility shoulder taps after already going hard is pretty difficult, but I still stepped it up enough to improve my reps. I improved by half of a rotation (full ladder length) for these taps. I know that I was going absolutely crazy on Day 15 and improved my rotations there compared to Day 1, and today I improved by half of a rotation and I was really happy because these were no cakewalk.
X Jumps – When the X Jumps started up, I was flying and got off to a great start – I finished my first 20 reps quickly, but got a little bit winded. In the back of my mind I was thinking about how tough the Vertical Plyo workouts were with resistance bands. And you know what? I picked it up and managed to beat my previous record by 4 reps. I was very happy with myself for stepping up enough to break my previous record.
Moving Push Ups – I absolutely hate doing moving push ups after already doing agility shoulder taps because both engage the arms and shoulder muscles. Today I told myself that I was not going to settle for anything less than last time and I beat my previous count by half of a rotation. In other words, I made it a full extra ladder length more. Even though this was just the fit test, my arms were exhausted when I finished these.
Agility Lateral Shuffle – I was a little bit winded during these lateral shuffles, but I picked it up to the point that I beat my previous score by 2 rotations which is pretty significant. I thought that I did a really good job here and I was completely focused from the second that this move started.
Agility Bear Crawl – I’ll admit doing the agility bear crawl as the last move was a major mental challenge. I managed to beat my previous score by one and a half rotations, but I felt like I spazzed at the end on this one.

Last Day of The Asylum (Fit Test #3 Recap)
Looking back on this final day of The Asylum, I realize that there are two reasons that I did so well and improved my results on this Fit Test #3. The primary reasons that I was able to improve had to do with the fact that: A) I was in better shape and B) I had more focus. Don’t get the focus part confused through, because Shaun T was the person who got me in the right state of mind for this final test. During all of the workouts leading up to the final day, one of the things he always preached was focus and I think that focusing on always being “in it to win it” is something that stuck with me through this final day.
Although The Asylum is really intense, it comes down to how hard you are willing to push yourself. There is nobody at your house making sure that you are digging deep, so you need to hold yourself accountable. Because I was willing to push myself and my own limits both physically and mentally, Shaun T and The Asylum was able to work magic and whoop my ass into better shape. It feels really good to have finished another workout series and be able to write about it each day to track my progress.
I am glad that I am finally done with this 30 day series and know that if I ever need to get my ass into better shape in just one month, this will definitely do the trick. However, this workout is for people that have already made it through the O.G. Insanity series. If you haven’t already survived the original 60 days of Insanity, you will want to make sure you can handle that before moving on to this. If you have only done P90X, you may feel like you are running through a brick wall if you decide to try The Asylum. The Asylum isn’t all fun and games like P90X, but it will get your ass into tip top shape if you put forth the effort.
I plan on writing a full length review of the 30 days when I get time. Until then, I am going to just enjoy the fact that I finished these 30 days because it was one hell of a tough commitment (mostly because the workouts were so tough). What I loved though was the fact that most were under 60 minutes so it saved me a lot of time by going all out in a relatively short amount of time. Day 30 is officially complete and I do not plan on doing the hybrid with P90X or the original Insanity as of yet. I’m done though… you heard! Time for something new…
