What’s really important to you? What are your beliefs? Did you recently set up a blog for the purpose of “making money online?” It’s cool if you did — I wish you the best of luck on your journey, I’m trying to get some money too (just $10 mill’)… Making money online can definitely be fun to do, but not something that your life should revolve around. Often times we find ourselves getting caught up and so focused on money, that we lose sight of what really matters! Below I’ve written a great list of 10 things that I feel are more important than making money online!
1) Being with family — All of you would gladly trade their money made online for spending time with your family. Your brothers, sisters, mom, dad, kids, and spouse are much more valuable than any amount of money. Keep it real and be true to yourself: spend time more time with your family if you aren’t already! Family without a doubt is more important than making money online.
2) Spending time with friends — Where would you be in life without your friends? To be honest, life would completely suck without developing some good friendships. If I had to choose between spending time with friends and spending time blogging, without a doubt I’d go with my friends! It’s great to hang out, chat, laugh, and enjoy time with one another! It’s an easy choice: friends are more important than money.
3) Staying fit and healthy — Unfortunately, many people prioritize blogging and making money higher than their physical well-being. Sitting in front of the computer all day without getting any exercise is a terrible habit to get into. Some days everyone will struggle with this, but think about your life in the long-term: getting a good workout each day will probably reduce the chance of developing certain diseases and make you live longer. Living longer = more years to make money online ;) Be sure to do something to keep your body healthy!
4) Feeling confident – Having a healthy mind, being able to stay focused, and feel confident are what helps create success. When things like depression or drug addiction set in, it’s really tough to deal with life, let alone making money online and blogging. I’d gladly trade making money online for a confident mindset and emotional wellness. Try to keep your brain healthy: it definitely helps me bring my “A”-game to the blogosphere. Bringing an “A”-game involves staying positive and making the most out of your time spent online! It is much easier to do when you are feeling confident and are in a positive mood. You may also notice that bloggers who keep their writing tone positive tend to do much better than the “negative Nellies.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to read depressing or discouraging material online!
5) Making a difference – There are people starving, struggling, fighting, bored, tired, sad, and experiencing hell. If I can make a difference in someones life each day, then by all means I’d sacrifice my goal to make money online. The cool thing is, you can make a difference in at least one person’s life each day. Challenge yourself to make a difference in at least one person’s life. Making a difference doesn’t need to be a big task or require you to spend money. Tell a joke, put a smile on someones face, volunteer, take your wife out to eat, at least do something! Making a difference is always more important to me than making money.
6) Accomplishing goals – Damn, it feels good to accomplish a goal! When you put forth the necessary time and effort to do something like run a mile everyday for a year, no “ifs, ands, or buts,” I guarantee you will feel much more fulfilled than the act of making money. Making money definitely feels good, and accomplishing money-related goals feel good! But, there are other areas of life you can set goals in! Health goals, spiritual goals, commitment goals, etc. You get the picture: feeling good about accomplishing goals and actually accomplishing goals in other areas of life is key.
7) Staying educated and trying new things — It is important to stay educated. I would never sacrifice my college education, general knowledge and skills that I’ve built up. When I learn new things, I try new things, and new opportunities open up! Last year, I didn’t even know what a blog was: I read up on them, gave it a shot to the best of my ability, and have enjoyed every moment of being online. Education is always important in all areas of life. Knowledge is power… and a timesaver. When you know how to do something properly, you save a lot of extra time. The act of making money online is much easier if you work with a professional for awhile!
8) Meeting new people – New people = new opportunities = more fun and excitement in life. Meeting new people is a great part of life that should never be sacrificed for money! Life is more fun when there’s “something” or “someone” new to look forward to!
9) Laughing and smiling – You’ve gotta admit that smiling and laughing keep you positive and promote well-being. Laughing with friends, family, strangers, etc. and keeping a smile on your face are just a modern marvel of life that cannot be traded for any amount of money! I’d rather see a person with a huge grin on their face laughing at me, than a grumpy money hungry nutcase looking at me with a tight grip on his wallet!
10) Enjoying life – If you aren’t having fun in life, it’s really time to start! There’s really a lot or activities that you can do to have fun in life. If you are cooped up next to the computer, worried about “making money online” all the time, chances are you are not having much fun. Get out of the room experience life, you can balance blogging and making money online with life! A perfect example of a blogger and hot-shot money maker is John Chow. John definitely knows how to balance making money online with life. You can tell that Chow has fun just by reading his blog and looking at all of his party pictures and dining pictures! If you aren’t already, get up and start enjoying life!

3Andrew, excellent post again. I’m sure that attempting to earn massive amounts of money online can blind you to what really matters. While I’m not afflicted with the problem of making massive amounts of money online, I’ve seen myself start to become blinded to the better things of life while just trying to learn internet marketing. Most of my nights now are taken up trying to learn this and that and trying to catch up to the locomotive that’s internet marketing. Then throw in making a website (learing Wordpress/PHP from scratch - thank God for the Internet) and trying to get good content everyday. It’s easy to see how all this can start to alienate the things that really matter in life.
There is something to be said, though, for trying everything you can to secure a better life for your family.

4Hey Brian, I’m glad you enjoyed the article. Attempting to earn any type of money anywhere can make you blind if you don’t realize that there are really more important things. It’s fun to make money online, but sometimes people need a reminder of what really matters.
Trying to secure a better life for your family is definitely important. Thanks for sharing your comments Bryan ;)

19Love this post! I believe in our endeavor and pursuit of “success” it is natural that we narrow our focus to better frame our goals - yet we cannot do so at the exclusion of all else. In addition to the areas you mentiond, I would also add spending time with the Creator. I try to start each day with the Word, meditation and prayer. Sometimes, it is a struggle. I feel such a pull to jump up and get on the computer. But I resist and am always satisfied with that hour or so with God. When I do sit down to work, I know I have His help. Great post!

23#1, 2, 9, & 10 are the reasons why most of us want to make money online. Right? That way we can work less and enjoy the important things more. Just remember that and actually live up to that goal to work less and not more. Do not change it to “work less, eventually”.
I think I spend a lot of time doing #5, which is why I don’t really mind not making much money online.
I actually wrote a small application to help with both #3 & #6. It’s called Instant Boss.
#7 will give you plenty to write about, and the joy of discovery will help you accomplish #4.
I am not entirely sure I am in total agreement with #8, though. It can be a bit over-rated. Think of all the miserable people getting out there and meeting others at singles bars that would be happier if they stayed at home and did something else on the list, instead.
