1) Freedom to work from anywhere
Provided the location that you want to work from has an internet connection, you have the potential to make money online. You could be chillin’ in another continent with a MacBookPro and wireless internet connection, blogging your heart away, traveling the world, and making a living online. Hypothetically, you could be at an all-inclusive resort, sippin’ a few Margaritas and still be working to make money online ;). I wouldn’t consider an all-inclusive resort a very productive work environment, but it definitely could be done. The possibilities of making money online are endless. Once you find a strategy that works for you and are willing to put in some hard work to make the money, things will get very easy. I have always enjoyed traveling, it’s great to see and experience what the world has to offer. If you are able to travel the world while making money from your online projects: I’d consider yourself living the internet entrepreneur’s dream! Having the ability to make money from any location with an internet connection sounds extremely appealing and a great perk that allows online entrepreneurs freedom that most workers do not have!
2) No need to put up with a boss
Not all bosses are bad, but who really wants to be “bossed” around? Who really wants to drive to work everyday and be told what to do? I don’t like being told what to do by a “boss,” and neither should you! It is completely wasteful that people literally donate their intelligence and dreams to a company that gives them a little cubicle. It really doesn’t make any sense for you to be working a job that is completely unsatisfying. Working a job that you are not inspired or passionate about is garbage. Anyone that graduates college and stays involved with a certain business for 30 + years is usually calling all the shots, which is fair… but won’t give you much authority in the company until you’ve done the same thing! I think, most people have potential to make money online if they are willing to learn, are passionate, and determined! Who really wants to depend on their boss to give them a paycheck and work for a company who’s values they may not agree with? You shouldn’t, so why not try to make some money online?
3) Spend more time with people you enjoy
Like every person that you meet: you may enjoy their personality, you may hate their personality. Same rule applies for co-workers. You may come to love some and you may really hate some, but you may deal with the one’s you hate on a daily basis. Do you really not want to have complete control over who you interact with? We all know that co-workers can be a huge pain in the ass at times. Why not start your own business, work hard, and spend time with people that you enjoy? If you get a job online, no co-workers will be around to annoy and distract you! It is always nice to be socially active and interact with others, but why not start making money online: work hard for awhile, then choose to interact with some people you sincerely enjoy being around? I know I’d rather be around all of the people I enjoy rather than surround myself with a few people that I hate and some that I may just put-up-with! What do you think about co-workers?
4) Choose your own work hours
It’s awesome enough to work wherever you want, but when you can have complete control over your “office hours” it is a lot less stressful and very easy to live with. Working whenever you want means that you could be writing a new blog post from 1:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., go back to sleep, and be ready to do other activities the rest of the day. Calling shots on your hours is tough to do for most bloggers, because most do not make a living online. However, bloggers like John Chow, Darren Rowse, and Shoemoney have complete control over the time that they decide to work. If I was able to currently make a full-time living off of my blogs, I would set a block of time everyday from around 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. to write a new daily blog post. After writing my blog post, I would have the rest of my day to enjoy other activities and keep my life well-balanced!
5) You call the shots: you make the decisions
Do you want to make your own decisions and always have the final say in business decisions? Chances are everyone answered “yes,” because we all naturally love the satisfaction we get from making our own decisions. Even if our own decisions are wrong or we make a mistake along the way, we build more personal experience at running a business and can learn from our own mistakes. You won’t learn much from watching your boss call all the shots and “rule the roost.” You just won’t build the confidence in yourself to make decisions if you watch from the sidelines. Deep down, you know you want full-control over the decision making process! Why not step up to the plate and do it?
6) Make the dollar amount that you feel your time is worth
How much is your time really worth? How much is your work worth? If you are more efficient than other people and can get done in 2 hours what most can get done in 4 hours, you would have an awesome chance to succeed online! Either way, my guess is that most people are unsatisfied with the amount of money they get paid. What do you think: are you getting paid enough at your current job for the amount of value that you provide? If you are providing your maximum value and putting forth your best efforts at a $10 dollar an hour job, I give you mad props! Most people would consider a $10 dollar an hour job a joke and not anything to strive for. But really, why would you even want to put forth your best effort at a $10 dollar an hour job if you felt that your time was worth more than $10 dollars an hour? It really doesn’t make much sense to settle for any amount less than your true worth. If you aren’t already, it may be a great idea to start up your own online business (like a blog) on the side. Take control of your own business and trade your value for money. I try to put forth my best effort all the time when working on a project that I believe in because it is something that I am motivated about. Q: How can you really be motivated about working for someone else at a job that pays less than what you feel your time is worth? A: You can’t.
7) Spend less time actually working
Now I don’t know if my crowd of RSS subscribers would be all that happy if I stopped knocking out some killer articles, but hiring people to work for me would sure be easy. It is being done on many successful blogs. Bloggers like to take vacations, take breaks from blogging, and some don’t particularly want to spend their personal time writing paid reviews. John Chow is a prime example: he hires Michael Kwan to write his reviews and allows guest posting from time-to-time. When you have been an online entrepreneur for a long time and can find great writing help, you can hire a good freelance writer and still make money through the deal. Michael probably gets paid a good amount for writing reviews over at John Chow dot com, but John is still making a healthy personal profit from each paid review - otherwise he wouldn’t have hired Michael in the first place! Outsourcing your online work can definitely keep the profits coming in, the business growing, and minimize your time spent working!
8) Generate a passive income
Wouldn’t it be great to be making money while you aren’t working? Wouldn’t you enjoy making money while you are asleep or hanging out with your kids? By being an online entrepreneur and starting a successful business, website, or blog, you have potential to make money 24/7 - whether you are working or not. Surely it helps to keep your projects updated, but things like Google Adsense, Bidvertiser, and affiliate program referrals have potential to make money for every click or sign-up. Newsflash: people can click on your ads and sign-up for affiliate programs while you are away from your computer! You can be working out at the gym and visitors can be clicking on your ads. I don’t know about you, but the concept of passive income and making money around the clock even while I’m not working definitely sounds great!
9) The competition isn’t fierce
In the offline job market, there can really be some hardcore competition. In the online job-market, if you can focus your efforts towards a topic that you really enjoy and are passionate about, you will succeed. I have yet to see a couple of webmasters get into a big brawl or two people virtually duking it out for a job online. If you think you can consistently provide people with quality content online, you will really have ZERO competition. Sure there will always be a few well-established blogs or businesses, but if you can consistently provide value, you will make money regardless of how well others are doing! Just take a look at The Rating Blog’s story: in less than 30 days it grew from ZERO to 1,000 RSS subscribers! If you can consistently provide value to others online, you will make money online, period.
10) You are the star
In the end, you are the star and you get to take all of the credit for your work! Being able to take credit for a valuable piece of your own work is always nice. Think about this scenario: if you work hard for a certain company and implement a new idea or strategy within the company, that company has the final rights to your idea! You don’t profit from your idea - the company does! Keep your good ideas to yourself and create your own online project. This way, you will get full credit and keep all profits for your ideas on your websites! It really feels great to have full control over your career: being an online entrepreneur is great! What do you think - doesn’t making money online sound like a great idea?

2I couldn’t agree more. Especially with #2. My last job in the military I had 130 people who worked for me. I was the #1 guy in my organization. When I left the military in late 2006 I started over. I become low-man on the totem pole and moved into my cubicle with everybody else. Needless to say, going from supervising 130 to 0, and then moving into a cubicle, hasn’t settled well with me. I want to develop an online business that will help me escape.
Keep up the great content Andrew.

Bryan - It can definitely be difficult starting out: climbing up the ladder. A lot of people want to escape. Online business can be a lot of work initially, but things will get easier ;)

4You’re right on the money, especially reasons #2 and #8. For me, not having to deal with corporate bureaucracy is the most motivating factor for me. I find it stifling and limiting most of the time. Developing passive income is what I strive to establish. I love the control and ability to earn money non-stop around the clock and having a global market at your feet.
